The present drawing is probably preparatory for the "Last Judgement" in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg (In. Gm 1589). The painting was formerly attributed to Christoph Schwarz but recently given to a "Master from Munich around 1590". As Kurt Löcher mentions in the museum's catalogue or works, Die Gemälde des 16. centurys, Nürnberg 1997, p. 462 the lower part of the painting Is based on a drawing of the Last Judgement in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, which was once Identified by Konrad Oberhuber as by Friedrich Sustris (Inv. Nr. Z 1834). This drawing which was once attributed to Marten Vos was probably the design for a small devotional picture on copper, which may have been executed in 1590 and had probably been commissioned by the Bavarian duke Wilhelm V. In his catalogue „Zeichnung in Deutschland, Deutsche Zeichner 1540–1640“, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart 1979/80, Heinrich Geissler drew attention to a drawing in a private collection that copies the lower part of the Cologne sheet. In all likelihood the present drawing is the sheet mentioned by Geissler and was executed in the Immediate circle of Sustris as a preliminary drawing for the Nuremberg painting.
